DAY 1. ROSE GARDEN OF THE HUGUENOT MEMORIAL

The Huguenot Memorial

STOP 1: THE ROSE GARDEN

Situated between breathtaking mountain ranges in the center of Franschhoek, a vast rose garden encircles a unique sculpture. Not only is this a historically and architecturally significant location, but it's also a significant public park and the most tranquil spot to reunite with the natural world. This gorgeous spot has pink and white roses in bloom more than once a year.

To honour the pioneering farmers who founded the town, the Huguenot Memorial was built.

Faithful Christians were severely persecuted by the French monarchs in the 16th and 17th centuries, so they traveled to the Cape of Good Hope, which was a relatively remote and wild location. Their skills in construction and winemaking left a lasting impression on the Cape and the Franschhoek Valley. To honor their contribution to South Africa, the Huguenot Memorial, with its recognizable three arches, was constructed in the early 1900s.

Constructed from stone, the towering group of arches is dominated by a sculpture of a woman reading a book, and the main structural and artistic motif consists of three thin arches. Standing atop the world, she has a view of the gardens, which are frequently overflowing with flowers, and a rectangular pond. The view is one of heavenly beauty, tranquility, and harmonious architecture.

The memorial's unveiling ceremony was held on April 18, 1948.

THE HUGUENOT MUSEUM

The museum at the corner of Lambrecht and Akademie Streets is across the street, and tickets for the memorial are available there. Plows, carts, and musical instruments are among the significant historical relics displayed, and the main subject of the exhibit is the development of Franschhoek as a town.

The restaurant, which is a part of the Mont Rochelle Hotel, offers casual bistro fare that includes the best cheese platters, daily fish specials, and cold meats from across the continent.

The kitchen opens at 9 a.m. and serves a variety of smaller, healthier main entrees that can be served as appetizers or main courses.

This Victorian-style Cape Dutch revival farmhouse, with a front door embellished with a real stained-glass window and a corrugated iron roof, offers warm hospitality, excellent cuisine, and a wide selection of wines. Your mood will be lifted by this place's light, airy atmosphere and amazing vistas. The selection of wines offered by Mont Rochelle, the winery with the red roof that is next to the restaurant, will leave wine tasters spoiled for choice.

This is a must-see sightseeing destination because of its stunning setting overlooking the Franschhoek mountains. Enjoy preassembled picnic baskets with loved ones as you eat on the chairs surrounded by lush gardens and shade-giving trees. This park's enormous chess board, immaculate playground, and numerous outdoor play areas make it one of the greatest places to bring kids.

Wine enthusiasts will find an abundance of excellent single and blended varietal wines to their delight. Because of its location next to a historical jewel with a genuine Cape Dutch style gable, the hotel is a perfect choice for exploring Franschhoek's historical path.

STOP 4: DRIVE UP FRANSCHHOEK PASS

A BREATHTAKING SCENIC DRIVE

The R45 regional road connects Villiersdorp and Franschhoek, and it passes through the Western Cape Province of South Africa. However, instead of going all the way to Villiersdorp, you just need to climb Franschhoek Mountain for a few kilometers—possibly as far as the entrance to Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve. Visitors can pause at a number of picnic spots off the main road to capture the gorgeous valley views on camera. Stop at L'Ermitage, La Petite Ferme, or Haute Cabriere along the way for lunch or to taste cheese, wine, or coffee. There will be additional details on these restaurants with amazing views later in the agenda.

Now that you are familiar with Franschhoek, drive up Franschhoek Pass until you reach the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve entrance, which is on your left. You can choose from a variety of hiking trails that will refresh your body, mind, and spirit. All of the hikes offer stunning views of the valley.

Don't forget to bring plenty of drinking water, snacks, a hat, and sunscreen. Verify the weather report and steer clear of overcast days. Prior to starting your hike, make sure your phone is fully charged and has plenty of airtime. You should also always hike in groups.

Leopards used to prowl these mountains, but these days, rock badgers, or Dassies as they are called in Afrikaans, or little duikers, are more common. In addition to the abundant birdlife, the fynbos flora offers a distinct draw to the area. A few species are in blossom nine months out of the year.

There may be a nominal admission charge. Find out the reserve's operating hours online.

A Park in the Franschhoek Valley

STOP 1: LA MOTTE

From the enormous, beautifully preserved Cape Dutch farmhouse in the distance to the enormous chessboard on the shaded lawn to the Pierneef Art Gallery, this family-friendly wine estate has so much to offer.

The watermill is approximately 1720 years old, and the farmhouse is an example of early baroque architecture. Inside, musical performances such as piano concertos and violin solos are frequently held in the underground buildings. Constructed in the manner of a Cape Vernacular barn house, the Pierneef Gallery is a veritable treasure trove of art and culture. Housed within are over 100 original works created by the renowned South African artist Jacobus Hendrik Pierneef, who lived from 1886 to 1957.

Visit the tasting room to try a glass of Pierneef wine or La Motte Straw Wine, which is sweeter and goes better with cheese. Try the cheese plate as well; it's not your usual cheese board, with a dish of gorgonzola parfait, blue cheese candy floss, black pepper honey cake, boerenkaas choux, straw wine jelly, homemade preserves, and pickles.

LADY OF LA MOTTE

This gorgeous piece of contemporary art greets visitors to the estate. It reminds me of the Lady of the Huguenot Monument, who stands for spiritual and intellectual freedom. Today, the monument is a well-known landmark and a well-liked vacation spot. If you know the identity of the creator of this iconic sculpture, kindly contact us. The main buildings are separated from this statue by vibrant rose gardens with coral hues.

ARTISINAL BAKERY AND GARDEN CAFÉ

Savor croissants with chocolate, bread, and camembert cheese as though you were in Paris, and take in the gorgeous ambiance created by the established lawns and shaded trees. Use this large outdoor chess board to play a game of checkers.

STOP 3: CYCLING FROM LA GRANDE PROVENCE

One of the most exquisite places to view in the vicinity of the town center is Grande Provence. It is centered on an 1800s-era manor house with a gable that is now the owner's residence but is visible to visitors as they turn into the restaurant, gallery, and wine tasting area. This boasts its own historic building, well-kept hedges, and stunning views of the Wemmershoek mountains.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

In addition to being a hub for the arts and culture of the area, Grand Provence offers lots of family-friendly and adventurous activities. Make advance inquiries regarding guided walks through the vineyards, guided cycling tours, and e-bike tours; these guided tours begin here and offer an amazing opportunity to explore the valley's natural beauty.

LIKE THE POND AT GIVERNY

When you reserve a cottage at the Grand Provence, you'll be treated to a view of an enchanted pond encircled by vibrant flowers and willows, much like the “Pond at Giverny,” which served as the model for Claude Monet, the well-known impressionist painter of scenes including water lilies.

THE CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY

The carefully designed gallery at Grande Provence Estate is without a doubt one of South Africa's most elegant and prestigious creative havens. It features the greatest creations in a range of media by the most accomplished artists in the country, with an emphasis on contemporary art. However, its outstanding dedication to the sculpture genre—where the sculptures on display are of the finest caliber—has helped it become particularly well-known.

This incredible collection is further enhanced by an extension that includes a range of smaller artworks, decorative pieces, and carefully selected African antiques. Visitors can purchase mementos of South African culture and inventiveness to take home from this annex. The Gallery's success may be attributed to Jean-Marié Olivier, whose competence and zeal are in charge of its artistic direction. Curating this exceptional collection is Pieter Lategan, a curator with a sharp eye for selecting and exhibiting the best in contemporary South African art.

THE HERITAGE BUILDINGS AND MORE

The 1800s gable of the manor house is a perfect example of neoclassicism at its best. A garland softens the double casement window in the center of the design.

The restaurant, gallery, and modern art store are all in the ideal location, with well-established trees providing fall warmth and shading the façade. This family-owned company offers unmatched quality and service levels. amazing gallery.

DAY 5. THE ORGANIC GARDENS

An Organic Garden

STOP 1: BABYLONSTOREN

This is a must-see place on any itinerary for a vacation to the Cape, regardless of the interests of the travelers—wine connoisseurs, families with young children, or outdoor enthusiasts. The little village of Simondium is actually the closest thing to the property, but getting there requires a lovely drive from Franschhoek.

Advantaged with one of the most charming ancient farmhouses and a variety of outbuildings, the owners have developed a large garden area and other attractions surrounding the historic home. For the large number of tourists from abroad and locally who want to view this beautiful place, there is plenty of parking.

THE GARDENS

The gardens, which boast a vast network of trails and unexpected visitors as they observe nature produce an abundance of Tours of veggies, delicious fruits, and berries, are arguably the farm's most well-known feature. See the greenhouse and nursery for Clivia too. Don't miss the Puff Adder Walk, a spaceframe structure that is presently housing a substantial bonsai tree collection. Tours of the gardens are led daily at 10 a.m. from the Farm Shop. Children learn a great deal about nature, horticulture, and responsible environmental living from these kinds of gardens. It's a really enlightening encounter.

THE HISTORY

The gable was initially built in 1748, which is when the slave bell was built. It was reconstructed in 1931 following its destruction by fire. After being painted cream for a long time, the manor house was painted white once more, which improved it and made it a more accurate depiction of Cape Dutch architecture. Enclosed by a ring wall, the immaculate grass in front of the main house is surrounded by outbuildings that flare out, creating the illusion that the main entrance gates are closer than they actually are.

THE BAKERY & RESTAURANT

On some off days, this second restaurant provides Italian and other specialty foods in addition to baked goods. Savour breads, pastries, and croissants made using authentic French recipes.

SAMPLING BEER AND OTHERS

Babylonstoren offers instructive wine tastings, complete with an audiovisual guide explaining the process and the distinctive qualities of the farm's wines. Don't forget to try the olive oil and balsamic vinegar made on-site.

THE SPA, FUNCTION VENUE, AND HOTEL

A hotel allows guests to stay in the middle of the property and enjoy all of the farm's numerous interesting natural experiences. Get pampered at the spa, or book the Wheat Barn or Old Cellar for a party.

The menu of Tokara's Delicatessen offers a wide selection of fresh and healthful meals, and families will adore the playground equipment, which is designed to evoke the atmosphere of adventure found in a real tree house.

This beautiful site provides excellent exposure because it's right in front of drivers as they approach the T-Junction where it joins the main R45 highway from Stellenbosch. The focal point of the design is an h-shaped, historically significant farmhouse from the 1920s that is furnished in the authentic Cape Dutch Renaissance style. The Simonsberg

STOP 3: ROSE GARDENS OF LA RHONE

This historic farmhouse is often missed by tourists traveling from Stellenbosch to the more well-known Boschendal Manor because it is located on the R310. However, it is by far the most picturesque of the two similar buildings, which were built next to each other and accessible through the same door. Just turn right at the main entrance to the Boschendal Estate.

Both buildings are owned by Anglo American Farms, and Rhone is occupied by Rhodes fruit farms. Tastefully renovated, yet off-limits to the public, the space now houses the company's PR department under the direction of architect Gabriel Fagan. Architect Gabriel Fagan oversaw the tasteful renovations, which are currently home to the company's PR department but are off-limits to the public.

A large circular driveway surrounded by roses surrounds a level patch of grass. This is the ultimate example of Cape Dutch landscaping and architecture, beautifully preserved. The gable, which dates to 1795, is a magnificent example of early neoclassical architecture. It has four full windows and two half windows that are mirrored around the central entrance door with a fanlight. Similar to Boschendal, the windows have flat arches at the top, but instead of being painted green, they are varnished wood. Shutters are absent. A brick stoep encircles the entire home and creates a type of low platform for it.

Located within the farm's historic building complex, a little chapel is the perfect setting for a dream wedding.

Admire the iconic "Tin Soldier" sculpture while taking in the unmatched views of the Franschhoek mountains with a glistening lake in the foreground.

The famous cellar building was constructed by Spanish architect Tomeo Esteva, who is renowned for his talent in creating luxurious, historical revival architecture. The architecture of the cellar is as old as history, despite its 1988 gable, and it looks amazing when paired with the immaculate topiary plants that greet it.
