NO 2. THE HUGUENOT MEMORIAL

CULTURE, HISTORY & GARDENS

The Huguenot Memorial was constructed in remembrance of the foresighted farmers who, in the 16th and 17th centuries, fled religious persecution in France and played a crucial role in the establishment of Franschhoek. Many of the Huguenots' inventive and hardworking descendants are now living in South Africa, where they take great pride in their ancestry. They did not, however, work alone; they collaborated with immigrants from other nations, such Malaysian plasterers, to construct the architectural wonders of the surrounding wine estates. Many of these individuals put in much more labor and, although they were kept as slaves, were provided food and shelter but not the freedom and compensation they were due. Their significant contribution to the founding of the communities of Cape Town and the adjacent Winelands is today honored by numerous museums around the province. This stunning memorial was created in the early 1900s by architect J.C. Jongens as a tribute to the French Huguenots. Constructed from stone, the towering group of arches is dominated by a sculpture of a woman reading a book, and the main structural and artistic motif consists of three thin arches. Standing atop the world, she has a view of the gardens, which are frequently overflowing with flowers, and a rectangular pond. The view is one of heavenly beauty, tranquility, and harmonious architecture. The memorial's unveiling ceremony was held on April 18, 1948. See the page ABOUT THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS in Cape Town during the holidays and weekends.

THE HUGUENOT MUSEUM

The museum at the corner of Lambrecht and Akademie Streets is across the street, and tickets for the memorial are available there. Plows, carts, and musical instruments are among the significant historical relics displayed, and the main subject of the exhibit is the development of Franschhoek as a town.

With its manor house and several outbuildings housing tourist attractions, souvenirs, a bakery, and a lovely green park shaded by trees, this old Cape Dutch farm is a great spot to take kids on a weekend during the sweltering Cape summers.

THE HISTORICAL MANOR HOUSE

The gable of the main house dates from 1836, but the building is most likely much older. One could consider its well-proportioned design to be a gable that unites the baroque and more austere neoclassical styles. According to the gable's date, the style is officially categorized as late-neoclassical. Visitors to the wine shops, bakery, and art gallery may readily examine the structures, even though they are not permitted to enter the historical areas of the estate. To see the interior of the Estate Cellar, reserve a seat during a classical concert.

STATUE OF THE LADY
