DAY ONE: FROM LA MOTTE TO FRANSCHOEK

STOP 1 is THE HUGUENOT MEMORIAL

The memorial is among the most important sites to see in Cape Town.

It was built in the early 1900s and is made up of three thin stone arches. A sculpture depicting a woman reading a book while perched on top of the globe is placed in front of the arches, next to a pond. With rose gardens lighting up the foreground and towering mountains in the background, this scene is picture-perfect. It was established to recognize the settlers' historical contributions to the French Huguenot heritage of Franschhoek and the Western Cape. The three arches stand for the Holy Trinity.

The architect was J.C. 18 April 1948 saw the unveiling ceremony and Jongens.

See the website CAPETOWNSPLENDOUR for top activities for families in Cape Town.

The Huguenot Memorial in the Heart of Franschhoek

ALSO VISIT: THE HUGUENOT MUSEUM MEMORIAL

North of the Huguenot Memorial itself is a building dedicated to preserving the apparel and furnishings that belonged to the brave pioneers.

The stunning design is modeled after the Saasveld building in Cape Town's downtown. It was eventually transformed into a second building after originally being a part of a farm complex. Neocolonial architecture has light-colored colonnades and reduced bulk due to the narrow roof truss span, thus the delicate structure enhances rather than detracts from the surrounding area's natural beauty.

Timelines detailing historical events are now displayed on the inside walls. The following is a summary of these events:

First and foremost, the Huguenots left France to escape decades-long religious persecution that only got worse under Marie De Medici, the French monarch who came to power in 1610. Following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which had offered some protection to protestants, by King Louis XIV in 1685, the first wave of refugees fleeing religious persecution started. Vitamin deficiencies plagued many sailors throughout the perilous ship journey from Europe to the African coast. The citrus gardens of the Cape offered a rest stop for refreshments on the route to the East and subsequently Australia. See THIS LINK TO BUILT ATTRACTIONS for for more about luxury modern buildings style in South Africa.

The settlers initially earned their living in what was known as the "Elephants Valley" back then. They were thriving by the early 1700s, and their wealth became symbolic of the Cape Dutch gables that adorned their manor houses on vast estates. During this time, Malaysian slaves were employed as highly skilled artisans, and they were able to produce plasterwork with distinctive and recognized designs.

The bell towers on farms called the slaves to work. Although some of the farms provided slaves with decent housing and living conditions, many of the farms still had the dark, cramped sheds that were remnants of slavery. The Dutch quickly supplanted the French language at the Cape, combining with Xhosa and English to form Afrikaans.

Nonetheless, the heritage is attested to by the surnames of numerous Afrikaans people, including those who have made noteworthy contributions to the country, and the distinctly French names of farms that persist to this day. Visit this museum to get a fascinating and enlightening experience in a beautiful setting.

The ticket office is where you can find the Huguenot Museum.

The museum at the corner of Lambrecht and Akademie Streets is across the street, and tickets for the memorial are available there. Plows, carts, and musical instruments are among the significant historical relics displayed, and the main subject of the exhibit is the development of Franschhoek as a town.

Locals will pay R100 for an adult and R50 for a child in 2023.

For foreigners, the price is R200. Inquire about discounts for senior citizens.

STOP 4: THE CAPE DUTCH OF LA MOTTE

The farmhouse on the estate was constructed in a t-shape and is a historically noteworthy building.
The watermill was most likely constructed around 1720. The gable of the main house dates from 1836, but the building is most likely much older. One could consider its well-proportioned design to be a gable that unites the baroque and more austere neoclassical styles. According to the gable's date, the style is officially categorized as late-neoclassical.
Visitors to the wine shops, bakery, and art gallery may readily examine the structures, even though they are not permitted to enter the historical areas of the estate. To see the interior of the Estate Cellar, reserve a seat during a classical concert.

DAY 2. AROUND BABYLONSTOREN CAPE DUTCH MANOR HOUSE

1. VREDE EN LUST HERITAGE BUILDINGS AND RESTAURANT

Nestled behind the primary wine tasting area is a historically significant Cape Dutch home. The two dates on the gable, 1688 and 1955, are believed to represent the year of the building's initial construction as well as the year of a significant post-fire restoration job.

The front door is beautifully carved, with a heavy lintol over an architrave window. Strong pilaster components and a distinctly neoclassical design characterize the gable. In keeping with the Cape Dutch architectural style, the house has white walls and a thatched roof.

THE CENTER FOR WINE TASTING

For groups looking to partake in the bounty of the Cape, the wine tasting center's spacious interior and wide faux thatch roof make it a highly welcoming venue. This is the ideal location to take in the breathtaking views of the Groot Drakenstein mountain and the surrounding terroir, and it offers an extensive selection of excellent wines.

HISTORY

The slave bell's date of construction is roughly 1748, when the gable was first constructed. After being destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt in 1931. The manor house was painted cream for many years, but having it painted white once more has improved it and made it a better representation of Cape Dutch architecture. The well-kept lawn in front of the main house is enclosed by a ring wall, and it is flanked by outbuildings that flare out, giving the impression that the main entrance gates are farther away than they actually are.

THE RESTAURANT - BABEL

Here is where organic farms really shine; you may sample expertly prepared fresh fruit.

DAY 5. HEART OF THE FRANSCHHOEK VALLEY

PLAISIR DE MERLE

The soil nutrients and damp winters at the Plaisir de Merle Wine Estate create an ideal environment for growing distinctive noble varietals that are complex, elegant, and one-of-a-kind. The rolling foothills of the massive Simonsberg Mountains offer a wide range of microclimates, allowing for a wider selection of cultivars. Charles Marais, the founder, was a Frenchman who, in 1687, packed up his family and set ship for the Groot Drakenstein Valley. In 1693, he received property from Simon van der Stel, the Cape Governor. He named it Le Plessis Marly, after his hometown. The French name of the estate now is Plaisir de Merle, which means "Pleasure of the Blackbird." The name has been even further condensed to "Plaisir" in order to establish a memorable label for the Estate and its exceptional wines. Guests are allowed to make their home in these picturesque cottages on the property.

The Cape Dutch Style gables are fine examples of the neoclassical style, with pediments and urns and garlands embellishing the central gables Symmetrically placed doors and sliding sash windows are also in keeping with the style.

BOSCHENDAL HERITAGE BUILDINGS

Boschendal, situated as it is directly in front of the Groot Drakenstein rocky outcrops and with an exquisite neoclassical gable, is one of the top tourist destinations in the greater Franschhoek area. A grove of hundreds-year-old oak trees surrounds the stunning H-shaped mansion. Two eateries, the "Werf restaurant" and the "Deli restaurant," together with a store and a butcher shop, have established themselves in the former barns.

The manor home has windows with circular tops that are painted green. Every lower window has operable shutters. Although it is now the center of all agricultural operations, the estate does periodically welcome visitors for tours during art exhibits and other events, when they may admire its timbered ceilings and lavish interior. The gable dates around 1810, fifteen years before its Rhone neighbor. The 1970s restoration project unearthed the foundations of an older T-shaped structure, which was a notable find. Lovingly renovated throughout the years, the structures are now available to both local and distant tourists thanks to the farm's owners and caretakers. Its partners are committed to making a positive impact on the community and the environment, and they work together with other local farms that share this goal to keep the Banghoek Valley and the Franschhoek area beautiful.

In addition to bistro-style breakfast and lunch, the Deli is available for supper from Saturday through Tuesday. Sunday is the night for pizza. The Werf Restaurant is located in the restored heritage building in the cellar, just opposite from the manor house. Enjoy looking at this authentic Cape Dutch interior, which is unusual to see these days. Eating here is excellent for the community since they encourage ethically sourced items and vegetables. Many of the items come from the expansive Werf Food Garden, which can be seen from your table. The restaurant is known for its Black Angus Beef and Forest Reared Duroc Pork.
